Redirect 404 to Homepage

Product: Admin Framework Pro

The Redirect 404 to Homepage module automatically redirects visitors who hit a 404 error page back to your WordPress homepage. This helps reduce bounce rates, improve user experience, and prevent visitors from getting stuck on broken links.

How to use

To enable the Redirect 404 to Homepage module:

  1. Click on the “Security & Privacy” category
  2. Search or scroll to locate the Redirect 404 to Homepage module
  3. Click on the switch to enable

No further configuration is required.

What’s next?

When enabled, any front-end 404 page is redirected to your site’s homepage.

Where it applies:

  • Front end only (404 templates)
  • Skips admin, cron, and XML-RPC contexts
  • Skips redirect if another redirect plugin is handling the request

The module also displays an admin warning notice if known redirection plugins are active.

Best Practices

  • Use this for small sites where 404s should funnel users back to the homepage
  • For content-heavy sites, consider a dedicated 404 page or a redirection strategy to closest-match content
  • Avoid running multiple redirect systems simultaneously to prevent conflicts

Troubleshooting

  • Still seeing 404 page:
    • Clear caches (page, CDN, browser)
    • Check that conflicting redirect plugins aren’t intercepting first
  • Redirect loop or unexpected target:
    • Ensure your homepage isn’t returning a 404
    • Temporarily disable other redirect plugins to isolate the issue
  • Admin notice about conflicts:
    • The module detects popular plugins (e.g., Redirection, Rank Math, Yoast, AIOSEO, SEO Ultimate, Simple 301 Redirects). If one is managing redirects, this module steps aside.

Compatibility & Notes

  • Redirects on template_redirect with high priority to ensure last-mile handling
  • Uses a safe 301 redirect to home_url()
  • No settings panel; designed to be “enable-and-go”
  • Detects and avoids conflict with popular redirection plugins and warns in the admin

This module is perfect for:

  • Quickly routing users away from 404s to the homepage
  • Minimal setups that don’t require granular redirect control
